GreenBus is first of its kind in Saudi Arabia and our humble
beginning is rooted to an esteemed university, King Fahd University of
Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM). Upon enrolling in the “Create-E” course of Entrepreneurship
Institute (EIKFUPM) in the university, we were asked to submit business ideas.
During the brain storming sessions, one of the co-founder, Aijaz, came up with
the idea of solving the problem in booking bus ticket in Saudi Arabia. This
idea was quickly accepted and we three teamed up to work towards it. One of the
reasons, for quick acceptance of this idea was, we belonged to the segment that
was suffering with this problem, and adding to it no one else was doing this in
kingdom.
In Saudi Arabia we have two
types of bus services; one is government running SAPTCO, and another is private
running umrah services (Umrah is pilgrimage to Mecca, performed by muslim,
undertaken during anytime in year except during Hajj season). Since the inception
of this idea we were inclined towards successfully running SAPTCO, as it was
not having service for online ticket booking. Upon progressing with the course
we shifted our region of focus from SAPTCO to private running umrah buses, as
they seemed to be a feasible option for us.
Upon successfully completing “Create E”; we enrolled
in design thinking course and business plan competition with same idea. During
business plan competition we started meeting with local agents in khobar and initiated
our efforts for getting them onboard with us on this idea.
At end of business plan competition we were selected
for the incubator program in the university and that embarked our quest for
successfully solving the problems in the system for booking umrah bus tickets.
Before the start of our incubator program we already had an agent who was ready
to come overboard with GreenBus.
During the incubation program, we started
meeting more of the commuters every week, tried to find out the problems faced
by them and kept on bringing more agents overboard . The studies in KFUPM were
very tedious; to cope up with the work at incubator program demanded a lot of
efforts from our side. Weekly discussion based classes, work update meetings,
mentor sessions and investor meetings made us make innumerable changes in the
business plan.
